In the fraternity’s 70th year at the 62nd Annual general convention in New York City, the first Miss Black and Gold Pageant was held. Miss Denise Smith, of Georgia State University was awarded the inaugural Miss Black & Gold crown. The Pageant was deferred following the first event and reinstated in 1982 as a national program and staple at our conferences during Alpha Phi Alpha’s 68th General Convention in Los Angeles, California.
The Miss Black and Gold Pageant, under the sponsorship of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is an event whose primary purpose is to highlight and foster the inextricable connection between success and etiquette amongst young women who serve as role models in the community. This pageant spotlights the young women's poise, self-confidence, communication skills, intelligence, and beauty. In all, the Miss Black and Gold Pageant encompasses true womanhood, success, and confidence. Academic excellence and scholarship are greatly emphasized in the competition. Alpha Phi Alpha provides the contestants with the opportunity to earn scholarships that assist them with the financial obligations indicative of their post-secondary studies.
The Mighty Psi Chapter recognizes the valuable contributions rendered to it by the many supporters of Alpha Phi Alpha, and this endeavor serves as just one mechanism to applaud such support.
Now as we continue to uphold this legacy and the light of Alpha, Please join the Mighty Psi Chapter, as we hold our 12th annual competition 41 years later to crown our new Miss Black & Gold!
